The calm-down circle: a co-regulation script
A two-minute whole-group reset for the afternoon the room comes apart — breathing games children actually do.
Young children can't 'calm down' on command because regulation is borrowed before it's owned: they sync to YOUR breath and voice first. That's why every step below starts with what you do, not what they do.
The script
- Drop your own shoulders and slow your voice to half speed. (The room reads your body before your words.)
- Smell the flower, blow the candle — hold up one hand as a 'flower' (breathe in through the nose), one finger as a 'candle' (blow out slowly). Three rounds.
- Melt like ice cream — everyone melts to the floor in slow motion while you count down from five in a whisper.
- Name it — “That was a loud, busy moment. Our bodies are quiet now. What does your body feel like?” Take two answers, no corrections.
