🗓️ A year of monthly themes

Use these as starting points, not scripts: swap any month for what your children are actually curious about. A theme earns its week when children bring it up before you do.

September — All about me & my new room

• Self-portrait station with mirrors and skin-tone crayons.
• Family photo wall at child height — home comes to school.
• Classroom jobs launch: every child gets a job the first week.
• Words to grow: name, family, same, different, belong.

October — Autumn & harvest

• Leaf-sorting tray by color, size, and shape (early math hiding in a walk outside).
• Pumpkin investigation: predict, then count the seeds of a real pumpkin together.
• Apple-print patterns with halved apples and paint.
• Words to grow: harvest, crunchy, seed, predict, pattern.

November — Gratitude & helpers

• A class 'thank you' book: each child dictates one page for someone who helps them.
• Community-helper dramatic play: rotate props weekly (clinic, kitchen, repair shop).
• Soup-making with real vegetables children wash and tear.
• Words to grow: grateful, helper, community, share, kind.

December — Light & celebrations everywhere

• Family celebration share: invite families to send a photo or object from their own tradition — every tradition gets the same shelf.
• Light table (or flashlight den) exploration with translucent shapes.
• Wrapping station: boxes, paper, tape — the fine-motor workout disguised as play.
• Words to grow: celebrate, tradition, bright, family, give.

January — Winter science

• Ice rescue: freeze small toys in ice; children free them with warm water droppers and salt.
• Mitten-match game with real mittens on a clothesline.
• How do animals stay warm? Blubber-glove experiment (shortening in a zip bag, ice water).
• Words to grow: freeze, melt, temperature, cozy, experiment.

February — Friendship & feelings

• Kindness chain: every noticed kind act adds a paper link across the ceiling.
• Feelings-face studio: photograph children making each emotion; print for the calm corner.
• Friendship soup or fruit salad each child contributes one ingredient to.
• Words to grow: friend, gentle, turn, frustrated, proud.

March — Wind, weather & change

• Streamer testing day: which materials fly? Ribbon, paper, foil, fabric on a windy walk.
• Class weather station: a daily observer charts sun/clouds/rain all month.
• Plant grass seed in clear cups — roots you can watch.
• Words to grow: breeze, forecast, sprout, observe, change.

April — Growing things

• Bean in a bag on the window: seed diary with weekly drawings.
• Worm hotel (clear jar, soil, leaves) with magnifiers and gentle-hands rules.
• Flower-shop dramatic play with real (or silk) flowers, pots, and a cash register.
• Words to grow: root, stem, bloom, care, cycle.

May — Bugs & tiny worlds

• Bug hunt with tally clipboards — count, don't collect.
• Build-a-bug art: bodies, legs, wings, and dots from recycled materials.
• Caterpillar-to-butterfly movement story you narrate while children act it.
• Words to grow: insect, antenna, hatch, tiny, transform.

June — Water works

• Sink or float lab with a prediction chart (children mark their guess first).
• Car wash day: tricycles, sponges, buckets, and vocabulary-rich teamwork.
• Painting with water on the fence — zero cleanup, full concentration.
• Words to grow: float, sink, pour, absorb, splash.

July — Building & making

• Box city: families donate boxes; the class builds and rebuilds a city all month.
• Ramp-and-ball testing wall: which ramp is fastest? Why?
• Real-tools workbench (golf tees, soft wood or foam, toy hammers) with safety goggles.
• Words to grow: design, sturdy, balance, taller, plan.

August — Moving up & memories

• Memory museum: children curate photos and work samples from the year and give family tours.
• Visit-the-next-room walks so 'moving up' has a face and a rug before it happens.
• Time capsule: a drawing + a traced hand + a favorite word, sealed for families.
• Words to grow: remember, proud, ready, goodbye, next.
