Five transition chants that do the work for you
Original call-and-response chants for cleanup, lining up, hand-washing, sitting down, and goodbye — because a chant never nags.
A transition chant works because it replaces an instruction (which a child can refuse) with a pattern (which a young brain wants to complete). Teach one at a time; use it for two weeks before adding the next.
The chants (all original)
- Cleanup — teacher: “Blocks go home!” children: “Toys go to sleep!” teacher: “Hands get busy!” children: “Room gets neat!” (clap the rhythm as you work)
- Line up — “One behind another, like a little train / hands to yourself and here we go again — chug, chug!”
- Hand-washing — count to twenty with: “Soap on top, soap below / scrub-a-scrub, now watch it go / rinse it, rinse it, shake shake shake / one dry towel is all we take.”
- Sit-down — whisper it (whispering pulls attention better than volume): “Criss-cross, hands in lap / eyes on me, quiet as a cat.”
- Goodbye — “The day is done, you worked and played / look what friends and hands have made / wave to me and I'll wave too / tomorrow there'll be more to do!”
