A welcome circle that starts itself
A four-step arrival ritual — same order every day — that turns circle time from a round-up into a landing place.
Children don't resist circle time — they resist unpredictability. When the first five minutes are identical every day, the ritual itself calls the room to the rug and you stop spending your voice on it.
The four steps
- 1 · The signal — the same short sound every day (a rain stick, three soft claps). Never your voice: a sound can't get louder or frustrated.
- 2 · The welcome chant (original — sing to any simple tune you like): “Hello, hello, it's a brand-new day / friends are here and it's time to play / look at me and I'll look at you / welcome, welcome, [child's name] too!” Go around and name every child.
- 3 · The check-in — each child places their photo or clip on the feelings board (see the feelings check-in lesson). Thirty seconds of information you'll use all day.
- 4 · One tiny job — today's helper flips the weather card or counts friends. A job makes the circle theirs, not yours.
When it wobbles
A child who won't join isn't ruining circle — they're telling you the transition was too fast for them today. Keep a 'watching spot' (a cushion at the edge) that is always allowed. Watching IS participating for a two-year-old.
